Shinhan is a Korea-based investment bank that provides commercial and consumer banking-related financial and investment services, aiming to help clients achieve their goals by providing financial products and services that meet the latest trends while delivering high returns. It seeks innovative new solutions using a methodology it calls "creative finance," which it believes will attract more clients, in turn increasing Shinhan’s corporate value and leading to a "virtuous cycle of shared prosperity."

It operates through blended finance to mobilize capital flows into emerging markets or provides loans to test new business models or injects equity into business ventures.

Founded in 2012 in Washington DC, Accion Venture Lab is a seed-stage investor in fintech for the underserved. Venture Lab is part of Accion, a not-for-profit global organization that works with financial service providers to deliver affordable solutions for unbanked and underbanked communities worldwide.Its portfolio includes 44 startups from 17 countries, ranging from Chile to Indonesia. Seed-stage startups normally get $500,000 funding per company. Investments in December 2020 included participation in the $1.5m seed round of Argentinian software development tech Henry and a financing round for Indonesian micro-credit fintech Pintech.

Telmo Güell is a young entrepreneur responsible for the business development of The Beemine Lab, the first biotechnology company in Spain to produce cannabidiol-based cosmetics. He founded the company in 2018. Güell started his studies in Philosophy but he soon realized he was more fascinated by design and computer programming and so chose to specialize in JavaScript Fullstack and UX. Passionate about bees, he decided to start a project that would support beekeeping and address the risk of bee extinction. By combining bees with the cannabis plant, he founded The Beemine Lab, using bees to pollinate cannabis plants and cannabis pollen to sustain populated beehives.The Beemine Lab products are today sold in pharmacies, para-pharmacies and via Amazon Spain, as well as on the company’s e-commerce page.

The second cohort will involve activities in Austria and Germany.

Lan Song completed a PhD in integrated circuit design at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He worked as a research engineer at Rolls-Royce@NTU Corporate Lab, a joint corporate research venture in Singapore.His family used to be in the husbandry business that partly inspired Lan to co-found SmartAHC with classmates in 2014. He currently serves as CEO at SmartAHC.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Remote Sensing and Information Engineering from Wuhan University in 2009, Wu worked as a lab researcher at his alma mater. In 2012, he left Wuhan University to found Geetest with Zhang Zhenyu.

A Linz-based pre-seed investor founded in 2015, the company currently has 17 companies in its portfolio. Its interests span market verticals and technologies, with tech and non-tech startups supported, and varied geographical locations across Europe. It also runs an online learning lab for startups called Zero21. Its most recent investments include the €2m seed round of Austrian second-hand electronics marketplace refurbed and the €300,000 pre-seed round of German interview platform-as-a-service LAMA. 

Kyle Gazay is a co-founder of Diamond Foundry, the US-based unicorn that makes lab-grown diamonds and which is also the world’s first diamond producer to be certified carbon neutral. He has worked at Diamond Foundry since its launch, and held several roles there, including being COO as well as president of productionCurrently, Gazay oversees all diamond production at the company. Gazay’s expertise is in engineering and production. He has a decade’s track record in working with any equipment to obtain a robust and repeatable baseline output.Like the other co-founders of Diamond Foundry, Gazay previously worked at Nanosolar, a $640m US-based solar power technology provider, which later folded due to pressure from cheaper competition in China. At Nanosolar, Gazay led the development of its production line, and oversaw the translation of the company’s research into development and baseline production output. Upon the closure of Nanosolar, Gazay joined former Nanosolar CEO Martin Roscheisen and former Nanosolar engineer Jeremy Scholz in pivoting to work on lab-grown diamonds, and in establishing Diamond Foundry.

Founded in October 2013, JD Finance was renamed as JD Digits in November 2018. The fintech arm of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com focuses on applying digital technology, artificial intelligence and IoT in five sectors: finance, smart cities, agriculture, campus development and marketing.The company manages five sub-brands: JD Finance, JD iCity, JD Agriculture, JD Shaodongjia, and JD MO Media. In September 2017, a joint venture was established with Central Group, one of Thailand’s biggest retailers. In December 2017, JD Digits also started operating an AI lab in Silicon Valley.

Founded in 2015 in Limassol in Cyprus, Caspian Venture Capital Partners has at least six companies in its portfolio. Its last disclosed investment was in 2017 when it participated in sustainable transportation and magnetic levitation firm Hyperloop’s $135m Series B round. Prior to that, in 2015 it invested in US-based Diamond Foundry, the world’s first certified carbon-neutral lab-produced diamond manufacturer.

Unbabel Co-founder and CTO Graça is a machine learning and natural language processing specialist and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Portugal, where he majored in Computer Engineering. He is also a former postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. Besides working at Unbabel, Graça is a researcher at the IST's Spoken Language Systems Lab (L2F) in Lisbon and an official member of Forbes Technology Council. He also briefly worked at adtech startup Dezine as Chief Scientist.
